Wrong year!
To be honest it was a wild guess. I’m not a muscle car aficionado and have only seen a handful of Challengers in the flesh. Lucky guess it would seem.
Paul, Murilee posted of your spotting this car, back in 2008.
I hate to give it away, but those vents are memorable because they’re attached to a bastardized (and disco-ized) Japanese-American tie-up, as were so many cars from Chrysler. I always find it interesting how companies will share a vehicle which is totally ill-equipped for where it’s being sold, and then when it doesn’t sell well…blame the original manufacture.
I think this obsession of mine, to learn about all the shoot-offs, came when I learned that Rovers of the 90s were really re-wrapped Hondas (Legend as the Sterling 800, Accord as Rover 600, Civic as Rover 400) and are still being produced as Rowes…even through the BMW ownership years.
It’s a Plymouth Sapporo, also a Dodge Challenger, but originally a Mitsubishi Galant. According to AllPar, this is the vehicle that lay the groundwork for Diamond Star Motors.

Years ago the Japanese mastered the ability to manufacture aluminum condoms for cars and they would apply them over any vehicles that needs to scream, “sexy!” like the Plymouth Sapporo. It worked too.
