I shot this just a few blocks from the white over flat black MGM. So is the color combo of 2013?
Kiwi sporting colours I see nothing wrong with it, did y’all not see the black boat win yesterday. Primer with black shadow coat is for blocking the car straight ready for mega dollar finish coats or am I the only one here who can paint cars
Looks like they were both “painted” (and I use that term loosely..) with the same cans. Maybe even the same brushes.
Now I am liking the sight of this more than the big Merc we all just saw. The rectangular front bumper surrounding the grill cover, headlights, and a properly proportioned Blue Bowtie. Much better looking than the oversized and terribly colored Bowties on many modern Chevies. The curves of the body sides and hood are nice as is the upkick behind the C-pillar. Looks like this Chevy has a lowered suspension which goes nice with the aftermarket rims. I bet it was unintentional, but the flat black on this wagon is textured and has multiple shades so it look less dull than the Merc’s. And the final part that makes this Chevy nice is the vintage unrestored license plate.
Those don’t look like aftermarket wheels, they look like the classic Chevy Rally wheel.
I think the white over flat black looks better on the Chevy wagon than the MGM, maybe because it has curves rather than flat surfaces.
I do like the ’69 front end styling better than the ’70. The ’69 looked more “Chevrolet” and with the hidden lamps more sinister. It was a classic look. The ’70 Impalas and Caprices looked like more like Caddys and not in a bad way. I like them both.
I remember my dad and I looking at a brand new 70 when they first came out and thinking the front says Cadillac.
Of course, it has Rally Wheels. The code of the Chevy owner: It can have flat black paint, it can have a 6 and a PowerGlide, but by Heaven, it MUST be equipped with Rally Wheels.

Yep.. my friends are trying to get me to put those wheels on my car, told em I’d rather keep the ugly full wheel covers than slap a set of Rallies on it or Cragar S/S wheels that every one and their dog have.
A classic case of familiarity breeding contempt. People put Rally wheels on because they are a good looking wheel. If I had some type I’d have them too.
I think it is a new style trend – sort of a rat rod look. I have been surfing CL with #1 Son to find him a car (yippee- he insists on a manual!) and have seen several various cars – some quite recent – with this paint job (well, better done) touted as a major selling point.
Note also how popular black rims have become in the last year – quite a change form the chrome rim fetish of the past decade and a half.

Note then for 1969, they re-used the names Kingswood, Townsman, Brookwood for the wagons until the 1972 model year.
Matte is the new black.
I think I would be really happy with either of them.

Id drive this. There is a 66 (or so) malibu wagon around here with the same treatment but no white that is running a 6.0 ls truck engine and trans that I would love to get my hands on but its owner wont let it go.
I’ve seen some well done matte black paint jobs in the past few years. This, however, isn’t one of them.
Seems to me that in the wake of the “rat rod” craze, picking up a case of flat black rattle cans has become the uneducated and/or lazy person’s way of trying to make older vehicles presentable, and (they hope) valuable. Almost the modern equivalent of “leave it in primer forever”, only without the pretense of a work in progress.
Flat black just about *anything* over 25 years old around here, and suddenly “OMG ITS A RAT ROD AND THAT MAKES IT AWESOME LOL”. The local craigslist is always full of examples.
Turn off the TV car shows and figure out what a DA and a spray gun are. And get off my lawn 😛
Strangely, there’s a very similar identical sedan in my driveway right now. ’69, 327 with a 2bbl and a slushbox, rust-free ex-California car. It used to be light green, but sadly it was subjected to a Maaco scuff ‘n spray a couple decades ago that left it a funny shade of beige. All the gloss is long since gone, and the cheap respray is beginning to chip away, revealing the original color. Still debating what I want to do about it…
My dad had a ’69 Townsman wagon 327 2bbl / Powerglide (in ’69, its the only way you got a 327). Not a real reliable car, in fact it was horrible, and was only 3 yrs old when he bought it
Guy in my HS had a ’69 Townsman wagon, all black primer, with mags, side pipes. Car was 10 y/o at time.
A true ‘hot rod wagon’.
