I know Paul frowns on stereotyping owners of certain cars, so I definitely won’t comment on the type of _________(hint, compound word, first one a feminine hygiene product, second, a 3 letter word for a flexible type of container) these cars attracted.
In my experience, there are so few nice E21 320i survivors that they command higher prices than carbureted, square-taillight 2002s. Probably the bargain BMW now is the 1984-1986 318i. Other E30s are all pretty sought after if they’re in good shape.
High school friend had one (quite old, this was in the late 90’s). I never drove it, but when I rode with him, if “felt” fast even if it wasn’t. The vertically mounted radio was odd though… It also had the neat trick where he could take the key out with the car still running, which combined with a wonky ignition switch to produce the result of the car refusing to turn off at school one morning. I think he may have gone to class with the thing still idling in the parking lot.
His parents “persuaded” him to sell it when he went to college, since he wouldn’t be able to have a car there as a freshman. He hated to see it go, though, even as old as it was.
This was my first experience with ownership of a German car. Bought because my girlfriend wanted it. I learned a lot from both.
0-60mph 11 secounds. Ok I now you could only do 55mph but why take all day to get to it?.
Only a touch slower than a 2002 (10.9) with the effect of the emissions regs – not bad really

But they make a very good fun car at far lower prices than the 2002…
