(Update form somewhere over Nevada:) My phone decided it wasn’t ready to get up and travel with me at 4:15 this morning, so I won’t be able to be reached via text or phone until it arrives via Fed Ex tomorrow. You’ll find us at the Frist tonight and at the Lane in the morning. And hopefully, it will arrive at the museum early enough tomorrow to get some pictures there.
I’ve heard back from Rex Bennett at the Lane Motor Museum, and we’re all squared away to get the royal treatment, meaning access to the basement as well as the locked Nissan Corporate Collection. Here’s the schedule:
We’re going to go to the Frist Center For The Visual Arts for the Italian car exhibit on Friday evening. Let’s plan to hang out at/near the entrance at say 6:30, and make a group of it. If you’re late, you’ll know where to find us, although the Early Soviet Photography and Film exhibit looks interesting too. The Frist is open until 9 PM on Friday.
On Saturday, we’ll start congregating at the entrance to the Lane Motor Museum about 9:45, to get a good start on a very full day there, after its 10AM opening. Save your tickets from the Frist, as that gives you 50% off at the Lane. We’re going to also buy tickets for the basement tour, which starts at 11:30. After that’s done, we’ll go somewhere nearby for lunch, and then head back for Part 2. Rex Bennett, a CC fan, is going to take us through the Nissan Collection, which is not open to the public. The remaining time we’ll want to spend on the main exhibit floor, which has some 150 cars.
After we’ve exhausted ourselves, we’re going to head to a location as of yet not decided, for food and socializing. We’re going to want to go somewhere that’s going to be ok with us hanging around for a while, and preferably with outdoor seating, or someplace not too noisy, as my severe tinnitus simply can’t deal with loud spaces anymore (sorry).
Sunday? If anyone is still around and has any ideas, we can discuss them Saturday night. I have no idea how many there will be; one reader (Scott) just told me he was leaving Maine to make the drive! Maybe a dozen, maybe more. We’ll see…

Well, as I have hay down and a busted baler, I will be spending Saturday with my welder. Y’all have a great time!
Tools and extra parts are in the trunk; I’m getting fuel in a bit for an early departure time tomorrow. It hit 97 F here today, so I’m aiming for as much cool driving weather as possible!

Have fun guys, the Lane is a very cool place. I hate to miss meeting some of the folks that make this site so great, but I was already obligated to a father/daughter road trip. We rolled into Dearborn today and will make Motor Muster at Greenfield Village Saturday so all is not lost on the car front.

I hope to make it there Saturday. I’ve always wanted to see a Chrysler Turbine, and I have not been to the Lane in 8 years.
I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. Not being half the man Jason Shafer is, I will be driving a minivan. I am hoping that air conditioning, cruise control and comfortable seating will take some of the sting away. 🙂
My comfortable seating is a dynamic thing – I just put a half bag of poly-fill in the trunk for as-needed seat enhancements. But the old Ford does have a great highway ride.
I’ve recently read the Bellissimo exhibition program from the Frist Centre. You will not be disappointed. The weekend sounds fantastic and if it were possible I’d join the CC caravan.
This trip sounds just great, especially the Italian car exhibit. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to make it. I look forward to seeing the pictures and reading about it.
Aw man, this is killing me. The basement AND the Nissan collection?
Here’s the ironic part. I will actually be traveling through Nashville sometime midday Saturday. Unfortunately, I will be part of a 3-car caravan with LOTS of kids en route to Florida for the week. You know, to see Mickey. I tried to work out the side trip to the Lane, but was outnumbered 14-to-1.

I am so profoundly depressed I picked up an extra shift at work on the same day the Lane visit is happening; very absentminded of me. I doubt I’ll ever have a chance to see that Nissan collection and at only 45 hours away, it’d be very worth the trip. Someone please take some pics of Nissan’s snazzy ’80s and early ’90s cars for me–I’ll surely find something to say about them.
I am so, so jealous of you guys! Being 14,000 miles away naturally precludes me from going. I second Perry, though: take LOTS of pictures of that Nissan collection!

It’s only a 3 hour and 28 minutes drive plus the advantage of going from eastern to central time so I think I’m going to make the trip.
Now the question is what is the appropriate car to drive to a CC meet-up at the Lane? My wife’s Toyota is out of the question out of general principle of being too mainstream(and also since she’s away and this is what frees me up to go). That leaves either my 3 year old daily driver–which is an amazingly comfortable highway cruiser that can get 45-50 mpg depending on how fast you drive it–or one of my two cranky 1996 European convertibles. Since this is CC the comfortable daily driver will get to spend a relaxing Saturday lounging in the driveway.
I’m charging the battery and have put air in the tires of one and may put the rear view mirror on the other depending on how the night goes so I’ll make the decision early tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting everyone Saturday morning!
