Everyone seems to love Curbside Parking, so I decided to submit this picture with some Euro CCs. This picture was taken in June 1975, in Hillerød, Denmark. That’s Frederiksborg castle in the background, but don’t let such a majestic structure distract you too much–there’s plenty of good car spotting here, with plenty of now rare models.
I think today, they would all be considered “classics”. I see a BMW 2002, a classic today. I see a Volkswagen Squareback station wagon, another “classic”. The Ford Anglia wagon might be considered a classic
In the front row there looks to be a Toyota Corolla Wagon, then the Anglia Wagon, Opel Rekord Wagon, a Mazda 616 Capella Coupe, with the dark green one looking very British – Riley? Or a Wolseley?
The white wagon that you can see part of the tail on the left screams Ford to me, maybe a Taunus? In the middle obviously the Sqaureback, then at the bock center an Escort 2-door Wagon (the Transit Connect of its day!), a 2002, and and I believe a Volvo 144.
Most interesting that there are at least two Japanese cars, I don’t recall seeing almost any when I was a kid in Europe.

The dark green one next to the Mazda isn’t english.
It’s French, it’s a Simca 1301/1501.
I does do a good Volvo impersonation, I thought it was a 144 too!

That’s the car I was thinking was a 144.
Escort is a panel van the wagon had a different roof line and a lift up tailgate not barn doors.
That’s not a 616 – from the look of it, it’s the RX-2/Capella with a Wankel.
Joe, how do you tell? I thought the RX-2 had the little rotary shaped emblem on the lower edge of the front fender like the pic below. It’s the same body otherwise, right? Both versions got the double round headlights around ’72.
616, due to the lack of front fender and the grille “RX” badging. Also, RX2s were never officially sold in Germany, so I doubt very much they were sold in other European countries either. Their high fuel consumption would have made it a very hard sell for a car that was essentially competing in the economy car sector.
I think 616. The front grille badge does not look like it has any red in it, the RX2 coupes usually did not come with hubcaps, but trim rings instead (RX2 sedans got caps), missing fender badges as noted, and many of the non-US market RX2s came with rectangular headlights, similar to the red Opel wagon. Also looks like a small muffler in the right rear, the RX came with a bigger one.
… and then there’s the Morris Marina! I wonder if it had a rear seat or was really just a van version with windows?

Another in dark green behind the VW Variant
Behind the red Rekord, I see what seems to be a brown Opel Kadett B. But I’m not sure, it might be some kind of Vauxhall. Anyway, it’s definitely GM Europe.
The dark red sedan next to it is obviously a Renault 12. As is the white station wagon behind the dark green Simca 1301/1501 on the left.
Is that a European market Corolla Wagon? Front end is much cleaner and well-designed compared to the US version. Maybe the green mystery car is a Vanden Plas Princess? Looks like one to me
I’m pretty sure the green car on the right is a Simca 1301/1501. The C pillar is too thin for a Princess.
Behind the Opel Rekord wagon is a Kadet. Behind the green Wolseley 1300 is a Renault 14 wagon.

The gold car is a Kadet. The white Renault is a 12 wagon rather than a saloon. If you open the full size picture link, you’ll be able to see the cars better.
Quite a high proportion of estate cars with, it appears, both the Marina and Mk.1 Escort vans converted with windows into pseudo estates. The Anglia is 1965-8 as it has separate clear side light lenses, just inboard of the indicators. Part hidden behind is a Renault 12 estate with a saloon version also part hidden, parked next to the VW Variant estate. To the left of those is what appears to be a ’60s four door Opel Kadett. Most others are already mentioned above, save to say the Volvo could be a 164 or a 144, the difference would be obvious if it were the other way round, but from the back they look the same.
Interestingly we have three different opinions on the dark green on front far right.

I wonder what it really is? The Simca picture posted above looks pretty convincing though. To be the Imp/Chamois I think it has an extra pillar that those didn’t have unless there was a 4-door that I am not aware of. And the Wolseley has a really wide D-pillar that doesn’t seem to be represented in this pic although the angle does not help.
Mea Culpa. Forget the Imp – I accept it’s the Simca – the front indicator is under the bumper on the Imp.
Denmark has a cheaper license plate for two-passenger cars that can carry cargo, and it seems that every station wagon in the photo has this black on yellow plate type. Danish taxes on automobiles are extremely high, so it’s no wonder that people do what they can to take advantage of a tax break.
If we’re going to split hairs, then couldn’t the BMW be a 1602 as opposed to a 2002? Or is there a tell I’m missing?
It could be either one. But in Europe, the 1602 outsold the 2002 by a healthy margin, so the odds are that’s what it is.
Whats also neat is that there seems to be a movie theater off to the left with a big cardboard “building on fire” advertisement for 1974’s The Towering Inferno!
No doubt the Danes have banished all that parking in favour of bike lanes by now!
Actually, no. I found the same spot on Google Street View today, and it looks very similar (May 2012). Street View shows the same area on market day, so the parking spaces are occupied by vendor stalls. If you’re curious, the street address is 11 Torvet, Hillerød, Denmark. (I have a screen capture, but I’m not sure if posting here would violate any copyright laws.)
Denmark is certainly bike friendly. I toured Denmark for a week back in 1975 on a rented bike, and it’s an experience I will always remember and cherish. Here’s a picture of those wheels back in 1975. Mine’s the one with the green towel drying on the back!

Here it is, then. The nearby buildings have been painted different colours, but are otherwise the same as in 1975. The field of view is very different since Google appears to use an ultra-wide angle lens.

Don’t forget the Mondeo wagon with the hatch open. No idea on the smidgen of a white car behind it though.

Not sure it’s a Fiesta but maybe a VW Polo 4 door? The spoiler on the rear edge of the roof doesn’t look very “Ford” to me
