Reminder: The CC Heartland Meet-Up is next Saturday, May 11. We have a rough agenda penciled out, so that you can join us for part or all of it. Sadly, a ride on Cedar Rapids And Iowa City “CRANDIC” Car #111 won’t be part of it.
From about 1PM until 4PM, we’ll be at the Antique Car Museum of Iowa. Here’s the link. And the map.
Then we’re going to pick up some refreshments and head for Iowa City Park, where there are some nice shelters. Let’s say Shelter #7, which is right near the pond. Or possibly #8, which is right next to it, and enclosed, if it’s cool and it’s available. Or #6, if they’re both taken (not likely this early in the season). Just enter the park via the lower entrance, park at the big lot, and it’s to your left (west).
Here’s the map. Presumably we’ll hang out there for a couple of hours (4-6ish), until we get hungry, anyway. And then we’ll figure out where to go eat. If you have trouble finding us, call or text me @541-556-5789
Weather.com has an Iowa City forecast for Saturday of partly cloudy skies and a high of 65 with winds from the NNW at 13 mph and only a 20% chance of rain. Ideal for being outside.

Sadly not. The Cedar Rapids And Iowa City Railway (CRANDIC) opened an electric interurban line between the two cities (about 20 miles apart). That was during the great interurban boom in the US. As cars became more popular, it struggled, and finally gave up passenger operations in 1953, and this car was sold off.
But it continues as a short-line freight hauler, and has expanded to 60 miles of track. We used to hop the very slow freight as it left the UI power station, and then jumped off in a soft, grassy ditch near where we lived, across from the VA Hospital. I had always wanted to ride it to CR, but never quite pulled it off. Maybe on this trip 🙂
My dad says it has been raining buckets in Iowa City for the past month. In 1993 and 2008 were severe floods that put many of those shelters in Lower City Park under water! I don’t think it is that severe yet this spring, given the dry weather last summer and fall. But beware I wish I could join you as it would be fun to share memories of the town where we both grew up.

What about the CC Rust Belt Meeting in Detroit at the Walter P Chrysler Museum, Packard Factory, & any other automotive-related lamdmark in & around Detroit (Auburn Hills, Dearborn, Flat Rock, Woodhaven, Hammtramack, et cetera) of your choice on June 8, from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM with Richard Bennett (hopefully), myself, & others (also hopefully).
All readers, commenters, and writers are invited (keep spare change on hand if needed for admission). You must also bring your own CC if you have one (Ed, Herbie is allowed if you want to come with him).
Would love to come, but that’s a bit farther than a day trip up and back!
Knowing your current home state, I knew you probably wouldn’t be able to come, but I was just trying to use Herbie as an example that some modern cars can be considered a CC (whether current or future).
Given that Herbie is pushing thirteen, he’s practically in that no-man’s land between “modern” and CC!
Is there any possible way I could talk you into pushing it to the NEXT weekend??? I have the Oldsmobile Homecoming I will be at in Lansing on the 15th, and then that afternoon I will be heading to Ypsilanti, and will be in the area through Monday. I am all for doing a meetup!!!
And yes, I will be driving my Official CC Alero 🙂

I would kid about a thing like that? Maybe some of the suggested activities, perhaps, but we’ve scaled them back. Nobody wanted in on the skinny-dipping, and I didn’t want to go by myself; that’s no fun 🙁

You soooo know that I wish I could be there!!!
Unfortunately as many of you know, I just have a bit too much on my plate at the moment.
As I mentioned further up the thread, I will be in Lansing, MI on the 15th of June to attend the Oldsmobile Homecoming with my Alero. That same Saturday evening through Monday I will be in the Ypsilanti area.
On a slightly different, yet somewhat related note, there is a good chance that I might get to meet our commentator “Geozinger” this coming week as I have some business to attend to in Grand Rapids, and I will be rather close to his home!
You know, several years ago, I joined a blogging site called Xanga, and I made many friends there. In 2007 I pulled off the seemingly impossible and put together a meeting for some of us. We met up in Pennsylvania and spent a day together. We had a great time, and good friendships were solidified because of it.
I say all that to say that meetups like this are not only possible, but a lot of fun.
We are really only just getting started as a community of friends 🙂

Can’t make it, too many reports to write. For those of you who like your spirits, be sure to stop in Hi Vee or Wal-Mart and look for some Templeton Rye, my home-town (well, home county) favorite prohibition-era rye whiskey, reputedly Al Capone’s favorite, now available legally. My Aunt Ginny is in charge of putting on the labels. You won’t be disappointed, and “Enjoy in Moderation!”
Would be fun, but a 12 hour trip -one way- is a bit far for even me since I have to work on Sundays.
I don’t know which part(s) of the reunion I can attend, but I’d love to be there, if at all possible (I have a couple of potential conflicts). Paul, would you email me your cell number, which would help me find the group wherever you might be? It would be to honor to meet everyone there. Just don’t expect any profound automotive insights from me. I just like old cars.

I’m happy to report that “geozinger” and I got to meet for lunch today in Grand Rapids, MI at the incredible Quaker Steak and Lube (Yes, they put one in Michigan, it’s a miracle!)
We had a nice time visiting.
