I’ve been looking at this Beetle perched on the cab of this big Kenworth ever since we moved here in 1993; who knows how long it’s been up there. Oldham is a crane operator, so I guess it made sense to build a roof-top rig in order to carry a dinghy along. I wonder if the VW still ever gets used, or whether it’s just become a fixture that nobody wants to get rid of anymore. It’s not likely that a modern car would fit the custom-made carrier so well. Another view:

Looks like it still has plates (and bungee cords holding the trunk lid down?). Also looks like ”720” written on the side behind the gas filler door.
Bet it has a story to tell…

Makes me wonder if there are any current cars with the same track/wheelbase/tire diameter on the market. Anything else would require revising the carrier.
Really gotta wonder how it’s attached, and how they get it up there in the absence of any obvious attachment points. I suspet they secure the car to the carrier, and then lift the carrier onto the truck.

My thoughts exactly. If you’re staying in a metro area and watch your signs you can get away with 14′.

A car wash in my area used to have an old VW Bug up on top of a very tall sign. It was there for years, but I don’t think the car (or the business) is there any longer. It may have just been the shell of a car, with a body and wheels but no drivetrain, mechanical parts or interior. I think the windows were blacked out, although you wouldn’t have been able to see much of the inside of the car from the ground anyway.
A scrapyard on one of our holiday routes has had a Rolls Royce up on a sign for many years. Last time I looked, it had clearly shed just about every possible part it could that leaves it still identifiable as a Roller. Gone pretty mouldy as well.
Ha! With the trailer ramp gone, it looks like it’s stranded there! Ain’t going nowhere without a crane.
