Cohort Classic: Toyota Publica Ute (P30) – Cute!

Now here’s one I’ll never expect to find, a Toyota Publica ute, from about 1970 or so. This was posted by John875, and obviously shot down under, although I’m not sure if it’s Australia or New Zealand.

The Publica was Toyota’s smallest car, having originated in response to the government’s call for a “national car” with performance goals and yet very affordable. The first generation had a little air-cooled twin. But the P30 series arrived in 1969 a bit more grown up, and in reality was just a slightly shrunk Corolla. It had a 993 cc version of the K-series ohv four, and rwd, of course. And it came in this cute little pickup version.

The Publica morphed into the Starlet, of which there is one still around in Eugene. Thanks, John.
