Christmas is just ten days away, but I had to buy this Caddy for myself last week. First, it’s a ’61 Cadillac, and second, it’s a four-door, not the ubiquitous two-door hardtop or convertible. “Wow! A mini 1961 Cadillac? I must have it!”
It is in 1/32 scale, which is unusual to say the least. It is also very well detailed, with opening doors, hood and trunk, and steerable front wheels. This and many other Cadillac models were issued by the National Motor Mint–other models included a ’67 Eldorado, ’57 Coupe de Ville and 1918 Coupe. It was only seven bucks at the antique mall I frequent; such a deal. Looking quite nice in basic black too, I must say!
That leads me to my question. What offbeat, unusual or favorite car of yours would you most like to see in scale? And as these other pics of my “fleet” prove, the diecast car manufacturers have certainly been making more interesting makes and models of late! We can only take so many ’69 Camaros, ’65 Mustangs and ’57 Chevys, you know!
Personally, I’d love (in no particular order) a nice 1987-93 Saab 900S, Fiat 131, 1983-86 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, 1977-79 Pontiac Bonneville coupe (no Landau top please), Opel Admiral B/Diplomat B, 1985-89 Town Car, 1981-85 Volvo 240 Turbo Sedan (wagon, too!) and oh, how about a Continental Mark VII LSC? I’d even like an Austin 3 Litre! Opening doors, hood and trunk are a must.
And now I turn the microphone over to you, our viewer. What would you most want to see in scale?

Diapet of Japan made a Mark V, but they are scarce and usually pricey when they show up online. Matchbox did do a 1/64 version in 1979. It came in red with a white top. Of course, a big 1/18-scale version with opening doors, hood, trunk and glove box would be awesome.

I’m a Ford and Lincoln Mercury man myself so I’m always looking. Check out B.O.S. models, I’m certain I saw a 1/18 Mark IV and V, in light blue metallic they offer. I have a few of their models, and I will tell you they are much more expensive than the other manufacturers, but they do have the one off cars the others don’t. Also, check Greenlight, they make a couple Country Squires and a 79 Colony Park but it’s always out of stock. That brings me to the diecasts I would like to see in production. 1, a 1975 Mercury Colony Park, I owned one and loved it. Also a 1974 Thunderbird would be cool, their doing the Mark’s, why not the TBirds too. I would also like to see a 1964 thru 66 Chrysler Imperial and a 1969 Chrysler 300. Oh and one always in my all time top 3 favorite cars, the 1959 Ford Galaxie, 500, and Country Squire. The 59 Fords were gorgeous and way ahead of their time relative to the typical late 50s styling.. these dinosaurs were the greatest for us kids as we were growing up. It would be a great remembrance to replicate these models. Thanks a lot!

As for my diecast wish, I would love to see a 1978 to 1979 Dodge Magnum XE. I know Corgi Junior made one in the early 1980s, but it has no detail whatsoever.
A box Panther wagon, naturally. I watch diecasts pretty closely, and I’m pretty sure there just isn’t one out there. (I guess I’d take a Family Truckster-ized version if someone had made that, even if I hate that travesty!)
I see there *is* a Hallmark Christmas ornament Family Truckster decoration, but I’m not gonna count that as a model …
About 10-12 years ago Ertl was set to do a 1/18-scale Family Truckster (at the time they did a lot of movie cars–Starsky and Hutch Torino, Monkeemobile, etc.) but pulled it from the list at the last minute. I definitely would have bought one.

I love obscure models, but I have to say that your list could also be a fairly accurate list of the cars LEAST likely to ever get produced in scale! (Except for maybe the 67-68 Monaco)
I bought a plastic scale model of the two door Granada at the time. It was made by Lindberg. I wished it was a four door at the time.
I use to have all of those Lindberg kits growing up. I customized one of those two door Granadas into a four door Lincoln Versailles, and the filled in the rear window on the Thunderbird and painted it with Ford Diamond Blue paint to make a Diamond Jubilee Thunderbird. There were many other Lindberg models inc, Dodge Charger, Pontiac Grand Am, and others I cannot recall but would love to find some. I have searched a few times but nothing comes up.

I’ve long wanted a 1971-72 Pontiac Grand Prix diecast. There were the Matchbox-sized Johnny Lightning cars, of course, but no larger ones that I’ve seen.
I also mourned the loss of Nylint several years back, the maker of those stamped tin trucks up through the ’90s. Had they still been around, I would have loved to have ordered a bunch of their plain white pickups (which resembled a Chevy C/K truck), got my vinyl guy to make a scaled-down version of my fleet graphics, and given the trucks out at Christmas to my customers.

Regarding the 71-72 Grand Prix – either AMT or MPC made a 1/25 scale model kit. I had a couple of them – they came molded in brown color. I have also seen a 1/25 scale 69 Grand Prix promo model several years ago (probably in the mid 90’s), but it had a $650 price tag on it.

I also have a bunch of those Stahlberg models, including Turbos, 264s, a couple 142s and an Amazon. Also have one of the Intercars 240 sedans and the K74 Matchbox 245. I got that last one new when I was a kid; it came with a travel trailer.
But I’d really love for Minichamps or Norev to do a proper 1/18-scale 244/245 Turbo with four opening doors, hood and trunk/tailgate!

I owned a Monogram Snap-together Chev Malibu Police car in the early 80s.
I don’t recall seeing a wagon anywhere at the time.
There are craft-produced resin Malibu wagon bodies, the ones I’ve seen have been for the 1/25 El Camino kit rather than the sedan which is 1/32 (a less popular scale).
Oddly, that Malibu police car has the rear door windows open!
Any pickup truck besides the obligatory Chevy Advance Design and 2nd-gen Ford F-Series. In stock form too. I collect 1/64 farm toys and when I saw last year that Johnny Lightning put out a mid-60’s IH 1200 I just had to get one. My only other mini cars are a Ford F-350 and a Dodge Ram that Ertl made about 10 years ago (black cabs, no opening) and a ’69 Chevy Blazer that came packaged with a JD 4320 (produced at the same time IRL). I love the IH because Johnny Lightning took the time to make it fairly accurate for not just the time, but the usage–matte dark green paint job and black steel wheels; just how it might be seen on a farm 45 years ago. In fact, the most inaccurate thing is maybe that it’s an Cornbinder on a farm of all John Deere equipment!
And while we’re on the topic, any 1/25 pickup truck–model or model kit–either as a non-regular cab, a model newer than the early 90’s, or both.

I wish plastic model kits would offer a range of models versus stock/custom/race/lowrider. Add an extra front/rear fascia & trunklid and any Fiero could be built from one kit — I’d buy a pile of them…
One kit could build a ’71, ’72, or ’73 Riviera: what a concept.
I don’t remember the GM Colonnades being well represented in scale models at the time. Whether plastic or cast metal. I did own a Corgi die cast Buick Regal 4-door ‘Kojak’ Edition. Corgi also sold a larger scale die cast. I don’t remember a Revell or AMT version of the ’71 Riviera, however awesome that would have been.
Jo-Han had a decent 75 Cutlass based on the dealer promo. You can still get it on Ebay pretty cheap, and Monogram has a 77 Monte Carlo snap-tite. Those are the only 1/25 Collonnade models I know of.
Back in 2008, Matchbox released a 1975 Chevy Styleside in various color schemes. I bought two of the version below.
Nice color choice. I forgot about Kojak — a four-door is better than nothing. You’re right about the Colonnades: very little representation there. Maybe I’ll score a promo one day.
I did have a Monza Spyder model by MPC that was pretty cool. But it wasn’t of the same quality as the Revell models.

Ive also been clamoring for a 1968 Coronet. I know MPC had a 1/25th scale in 1968 and there were dealer promos but both are very rare and very expensive. They make 67s, 69s and 70s but no 68s.

Your quite correct. I have been looking and hoping that a Diecast model in 1/18 scale Maisto , Eritl ,Best of show etc would manufacturer more 1980’s domestic Ford U.S models in 1/18 scale . Biante makes Aussie Ford Falcons, Fairlanes and Utes , but they are a little pricey but good quality . I have a yellow 1981 ford escort (European version) Xr3 Mark 2 made by sun star a black1986 Ford Mustang SVO made by greenlight and a black 1988 ford cossworth Xr4 Sierra . I had to ” sheat ” and use the euro models ( The escort and the Sierra ) as “North American models because they were available in the North American market at the time American version of the Escort and the European Sierra ( marketed as the Merkur Xr4Ti ) I would love to have an 1/18 1983-9 ford Thunderbird , Mercury cougar and / or a Lincoln Mk VII or town car as a part of my 1980′ s segment plus there are NO Chrysler Models available in the 80’s ( 1981- 83 Chrysler Imperial coupe or a Dodge Mirada , Charger 2.2 , Daytona Turbo Z , Laser ,Le Nation etc..

Claudia , if you are looking for a 1969 Mercury cougar in 1/18 scale Greenlight makes a version of that model You can find them on eBay and Amazon for about 30 – 50 dollars range .
I’m not sure the picture will come through but I’d forgotten I had these three from Solido, bought in London in 1985. They are from the Age d’or collection – two 1961 Thunderbirds and a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado, all favorites of mine. If the pic comes through you’ll see the price tag from one of them – four pounds/75 from Harrod’s. And that was a year when the pound and dollar were at parity for a brief period. Have no idea if they’re worth more today. First time I’ve seen them in many years.

I had a lotus Europa model that I made some years back. I’d love to have it back again, but it was stolen in an office break – in. At least the Matchbox one I had since age 6 is still in my garage with my other 100 or so toy cars.

Like every real man and serious car freak, my brother and I have a slotracing track.
In 1/32 scale, Scalextric so to say.
Today, many of the cars manufactured are great, they are even more then great in detail and since one guy at the Spanish FLY company got the idea to install a magnet at the underside of the cars, they run like hell.
Thing is, I am a scenery freak, so our track is a copy of a late sixties early seventies French track and there are vans you can get from an old no longer existing manufacturar called Minialuxe in 1/32 scale (the famous Citroen H and the Renault Estafette though)
I’d like to see a manufacturar come with new kits of old cars, like Airfix we used to play with. They were cheap and you certainly learned skills to build your own plastic kit.
The Japanese Arii company have a range of kits in 1/32 from Japanese classics from the sixties which are more then excellant but apart from the 911 Porsche there’s hardly any car in their range that was sold inthe US or Europe.
On the other hand, maybe the whole plastic kit scenery will be a thing of the past soon, with the introduction of the 3D printers we may be making our own model cars in a few years time

I have the original Racing Champions NASCAR set that was sold only through Sears stores in the late 80’s, still in original packaging. I have an original Mustang promo (big scale, 1/18 I believe) with working lights, steering and motor. Some other oddball automobilia, too…
I started buying these 1/64ths when my girls were little and kept on collecting. Now I have grown children and a bunch of toys that have no home. I keep telling myself I will sell them off, but I have not had the intestinal fortitude to do so yet. That and my collection of Collectible Automobile magazines from the 80’s and 90’s. Someday…

The one model I really want is the one that got away 15-20 years ago *sigh*. It was a 1:24 (ish) 1936 Dodge Touring Sedan, like the real one I once owned. I saw the model at a swapmeet, but it was really expensive and I was to-ing and fro-ing about justifying it. After half an hour looking at other stands I just had to go back for it, just in time to see a customer buying it for his son… *sob*
There are other ’36 Dodge models out there, but they’re all pickups (eg the Hemmings one) or fitted with tanker or van rear bodies; I’ve never seen another sedan, and haven’t found any information of it online, so I don’t even know who made it. It would be great to see a 1972 Dodge Polara made. Love that front grill with the headlights tucked into the actual bumper! As cop cars, they were featured in Sugarland Express, Dirty Mary / Crazy Larry, and Walking Tall. Also on my list, the 1972 Dodge Coronet with its looped chrome front bumper. They were used as cop cars in Mannix, and as taxi cabs in various movies of that era.
With the exception of the Action Racing Collectibles Dale Earnhardt 1975 Chevrolet Nova in 1:64 Scale NASCAR, 1:24 Scale Davey Allison 1975 Chevrolet Nova NASCAR along with the 1:24 Scale Dale Earnhardt 1975 Pontiac Ventura and the host of other 1:64 Scale Action Racing Collectibles/Lionel Racing 1975 Pontiac Ventura, Del Prado 1978 Cadillac Seville and an AMT 1976/77 Chevrolet Nova 1:25 Scale model kit re-releases, The other models pictured here in my Personal Collections were already discontinued many decades ago. Since Die Cast Toy Manufacturers have rudely ignored the 1975-79 RWD X-Body models especially in 1:64 and 1:43 Scale, these were the only scale model replicas of the 1975-79 Chevrolet Nova, Pontiac Ventura, Oldsmobile Omega and even the 1975-79 RWD X-Body based 1978 RWD K-Body Cadillac Seville available.
As I have written through Comment Threads on Facebook to several Die Cast Toy Manufacturers such as Mattel Hot Wheels, Green Light, Johnny Lightning, Auto World, MC2 and a handful of others, I asked them to produce a 1:64 Scale of the 1975-79 Chevrolet Nova 2 Door Coupe as shown here. Many Die Cast Toy Manufacturers have rudely ignored the 1975-79 Chevrolet Nova models especially in 1:64 and 1:43 Scale.
Gotta agree with Pedro here, I would love to see someone do a 76 Nova SS. This particular car has significant history with Chevrolet. The fact is it was the last time GM put Nova and SS (Super Sport) on the same car. Definitely worthy of having a 1/64 or even 1/18 scale.
I have written to numerous Die Cast Toy Manufacturers during the last seven years and as usual no further serious replies. Johnny Lightning said they would look into it almost 5 years ago, then it never happened and nothing came from these.
Agreed I wish they would make a 1975-9 Chevy Nova, Pontiac Ventura , Oldsmobile Omega,,Buick Skylark or Cadillac Seville x-body in 1/64 or 1/18 or any scale ,but alas no one does.
Finally after this article was written more than 7 years ago, our prayers were finally answered even though that it was better late than never. Matchbox in their regular Matchbox 2021 series recently released a 1:64 scale version of the 1979 Chevy Nova and here is the photo.

BTW on my duplicate models, I was able to easily removed the hood tampo on the Matchbox 1979 Chevy Nova. Easy and cheap solution just rub a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol and along with a napkin or paper towel and scrub that decal away. Rub it firmly but not brusquely and that decal tampo will come out quickly. Don’t over scrub it roughly, otherwise you will risk taking the paint off as well.

A lot of the models wished for above have been done as of this date. But I am still wishing for a 1969 Mercury Marquis, preferably convertible, any scale, any material but small die cast would be best. Would also like the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis.
