What a great shot. The GMC tilt cab truck hauling a mixed load of mostly Toyotas and one Dodge Colt is a good start, and then we have the Chevy with a load of lumber on the roof. I’m pretty sure this was shot on a Ferry, most likely in Puget Sound. Looks like the car in front of the Chevy has lumber too, and the one behind has a boat. Life on the islands; you have to haul it in, mostly.
Bonus points for anyone that can identify the car behind the Chevy. I can’t; or don’t have the time right now.

Using a car to haul things on top is NOT a good idea. However, years back I discovered a 6 ft by 6 ft antique mantle piece at a flea market 150 miles from home. Fortunately my 69 Olds was a 4 door sedans. Put heavy blankets on top of car and securely tied to the center post. That was a long trip home on the Interstate. Fortunately made it home with no damage! But NEVER again.
I’ve done it often with my Acura Sportwagon As long as you tie it down properly and don’t exceed the weight limit I don’t really see the problem.
Maybe it’s not the best idea. But honestly, if you only haul lumber a few times a year and in small quantities, a roof rack on a car makes a lot more sense than buying a pickup whose bed you only utilize a few times a year, as seems common now.
It’s OK as long as you slap the load really hard and say “That ain’t going anywhere.”

Don’t take me too seriously here, but I have noticed from other posts that your tastes are generally limited to large, sedan shaped cars. We’ve got someone here using a large sedan to get the job done, as was often the case back when the photo was taken, yet it’s no good?! What would you rather see hauling the wood?
Big saddle tanks on the GMC, Toro-Flow or a big V6 under the cab? Can’t make out the badge, almost looks like V6 logo.
Always chuckle a bit when I see some loads strapped to the roof of cars, especially a mattress, don’t over hang the windshield and usually you’ll get it home in one piece, too much overhang and you may need to purchase a second mattress.

At least he wasn’t carrying a mattress and box springs…..which I have seen littering the side of the highway on multiple occasions.
