Rover is close – I reckon it’s the later Honda Ballade, the equivalent of the first Rover 200 as built in Swindon. The Rover doesn’t have the vertical section under the headlight. (Neither did a whole string of red herrings I was trawling either!).
I’m staying in that Rover vein and guessing MG something, but you have already covered the late eighties MG’s IIRC so I’m likely wrong. (Another) MG Montego is my guess.
