Such beautiful photography of such sad cars.
And I learned something: the term rip rap. I always called them river cars (or river bank anti-erosion cars if the person I was talking to did not know what they were). Never imagined they had a formal term.
Rip-rap was meant to be a pile of stones or a random stone wall. It was generalized to a pile of anything serving as a retaining wall.
I learned that term only a couple of years ago Andrea, when Baltimore County was doing a stream restoration behind my house.
The contractor referred to the rocks he was dumping (actually carefully placing) to direct the runoff as “Riprap”. I had never heard the term before then.
I had no idea they used cars (presumably) for the same purpose. “River cars”… I like that.
I suppose if they can use a Boeing 727 as an artificial reef, then why not? 😉
That’s a really nice set of photos. My first thought was that Citroen is a very long way from home.
2nd thought is how can there be another unrestored VW bus at this point?
Hats off to you, Ralf!
Hard to choose a favorite, but it’s got to be the Ford and Chevy in Booker, TX.
Thanks, here’s a link to a photo of how they were displayed from the road

Very nice .
I remember showing my Los Angeles born & bred buddy Rip Rap cars outside of Mojave, Ca., he was -so- excited to climb down the embankment and salvage some *perfect* stainless steel trims .
I really like that blue Task Force Chevy pickup .
