Long before rideshares and stretch limos, one could say that prom night often began in the driveway, with a freshly washed car and, perhaps, a camera ready to capture the moment (Nope, no selfies back then). These vintage photos show teenagers on the verge of a big night out—dressed to the nines, a bit jittery, and ready for a photo beside the car that would carry them to the occasion. The details may change from decade to decade, but the feeling is the same: anticipation, excitement, and a desire to capture a fleeting moment before the night begins.
In the lead image, this couple wore matching colors with the 1957 Chrysler Windsor 2 door hardtop parked in the driveway of a Texan household. This Windsor 2-door was seen in a previous gallery, and as for the model, it was the entry-level Chrysler during that era, with the 1957 model introducing the new and bold “Flight-Sweep” styling.

Today’s gallery is short, all images likely belonging to the same roll. Here, another couple joins in, with all looking picture-ready and with that late afternoon big Texas sky providing a pretty idyllic backdrop.
And could this Windsor be these couples’ ride to the Prom?

Not really, from the looks of things. Instead, at least one Chevrolet will be the one providing that service. The two-tone 1959 Chevrolet Byscaine 4-door by the curbside seems to have arrived at the Chrysler home (who said differences can’t be sorted out?), and is somehow involved in this night’s activities.
Elsewhere in the neighborhood, cars are fairly varied; across the street and way further back, a wagon I can’t ID, and closer, what looks like a plain white 2-door 1959 Chevrolet Byscaine, then a 1959-1961 2-door red Studebaker Lark on the other driveway, and a white 1961 Comet by the curb.

This is the one Chevrolet that we know is doing Prom Night driving duties for the evening; a Corvair Greenbrier Sports Wagon. This one is in fetching two-tone (though it’s not color coordinated with the couple) and carries 1961 Texas plates. These Corvair 95 vans were new for 1961; the van spinoff of the rear-engined air-cooled Corvair, and the two-tone and additional bright trim suggests this was the DeLuxe trim, spiffiest of the Greenbriers that year.
Clearly, the girl seems to be struggling a bit to get that dress through the Greenbrier’s door, while the ’59 Chevy is still parked in waiting.
All set and ready to go!

These photos are so sweet. Prom night with gentility. Thanks for the Americana.
Prom night event delivery using GM’s proto minivan? And her father allowed such potential debauchery transport for a presumably virginal daughter? Granted, we werestill a decade+ away from that Sammy Johns Chevy Van pop ditty. Great photos.
Prom night reminisces make me a bit wistful, as my senior HS prom was cancelled (long story – actually it was restated about 10 days before the event giving insufficient time to prepare) and I didn’t go.
’57 Windsor taillights are a blatant copy of the ’55-56 Packard “cathedral” taillamps.
Corvair Greenbriar not what I’d expect for prom night transportation. I’m not sure when stretch limos became the norm (although they seem to be in decline for this use and others).
There was a 1958 Chevrolet commercial where the “dressed for the prom” young man picks up his date and we see the 1958 Chevrolet and the final tag line is: “What a gal, what a night, what a car!” Quick search couldn’t find the commercial.
I think this is it – I guess a long version of the commercial:
Here it is…
Persuasive commercial – if you’re a 12th-grader…
I did not see that Greenbrier coming. It’s about that last thing I would have predicted.
It’s looking right “uptown” though.
Me too, but I think these pictures are illustrative of how different the early 60’s were from the mid to late 60’s. Pre-JFK assassination, pre-Vietnam War, pre-muscle car era. By the mid to late 60’s, even in my small town Indiana, kids would not have been so keen to ride to the prom in those outfits and the Greenbriar. By the late 60s many kids were skipping prom altogether to take drugs, go to anti-war demonstrations, and peace rallies.
You are correct. Up until 1963 the 1960s were just an extension of the 1950s.
Those two girls in their nice dresses sure were pretty weren’t they.
The setting for these fun photos looks like a nearly new subdivision somewhere in west Texas. Amarillo is a possibility.
I wouldn’t know as I didn’t go to my prom in 1971 as everyone would have gone with a date back then. This Saturday, my son a junior in high school, is going to the senior prom for his school with his senior friends. A bunch of guys just going but not taking a date. If one did that, in 1971, everyone at the prom would be looking at you as to why no date.
Did that for the “senior banquet”. Not even sure one could do the “prom” (solo) at the time. Never thought of it. H’mm.
I went to my senior prom in 1970. Our class still did things old school with rented tuxes and fancy gowns. I asked a fellow band member who was a junior at the time to go with me, and she accepted. I drove my mother’s 1967 Chevy Bel Air 2 door, and another couple rode along in the back seat.
I suppose if my aunt were still living in the family home, I could have taken her much more flashy 1961 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 bubbletop, but she had gotten married several years before and moved out.
Nice images .
I remember going to three proms because my steady G.F. was graduating early and so got two =8-) .
It was in the early 1970’s at the Biltmore Hotel in Pershing Square Los Angeles .
I remember one very skinny and young looking boy wearing one of those long sleeved T-Shirts that was printed to look like a tuxedo =8-) .
Very different times, those days were .

1970, no prom. Instead we went to the beach and got stoned. If I had done the traditional prom, taking a traditional date, using my dad’s ’65 Impala wagon, her dad might have not approved.
The bit that struck me is these kids could somebody’s grandparents or even great grandparents now since they are only a few years younger than my mother.
I didn’t have a girlfriend so I skipped prom. It was the early 80s and it was an affluent place so some people rented limos, some just borrowed their parent’s Mercedes or Jaguar.
