Oregon Christmas tree farms supply much of the western part of the country with trees. And they’re certainly cheap enough here. But since it was a mostly dry day on Monday, we decided to pick up a $5 harvesting permit from the US Forest Service, and hunt for our own. It’s not quite as easy as one might expect, because the wild young ones are often clumped so close together that they’re anything but even. But after a drive deep into the woods, we found this one was growing alone, on a steep bank. And we came home with a nice harvest of hedgehog mushrooms too, perfect for Christmas dinner.
On behalf of all us of us at CC, I’d like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas or whatever seasonal holiday you may be celebrating. It’s very gratifying to be part of such a warm and collegial community of car (and plane, ship, bike, etc….) lovers. I’ll be taking a break from CC for a couple of days, so we’ll be posting some golden oldies. Cheers!

When I lived in Oregon, (Yachats) we did that too. But you lose perspective. Our little tree was longer than the ’71 Buick Estate Wagon I was driving. We had a lot of greenery to decorate with. Still a great experience. Merry Christmas!

I am happy to report that the JPC classic Christmas tree is seeing another year of service (47th year?), so no sawing in the woods here.

I don’t take it that far unless I really have to. Or anywhere, for that matter. My damaged ears can’t take the noise on a longer drive in it, among other things. And although it hasn’t broken down in about ten years, I feel a bit more secure in the Toyota when I’m 20 miles off the beaten path on a deserted forest road, especially in the winter 🙂 Why take the chance?
Did your friend there cut the tree or did you use the hacksaw.

He sure could have. You should see what he does to the hugest bones that one can buy., But he’s a sweetie.
I figured the dog probably helps keep the tree watered.

Merry Christmas Paul n all its the 25th here already my Hillman celebrated its birthday recently first registered on the 9th dec 1959, I gave it a quiet Hillman Hunter diff head to up its spec it now will cruise at an illegal here 70mph so legal 62mph is loafing along.

One of mine as well. Really, there’s not much he recorded that I don’t like. I saw him ten times between 1975 and 1978, for the most part all great evenings, and I think his last recordings were among his best.

The photo of Paul and his Scion reminds me of what was certainly the highlight of the past year for us – discovering the beauty and many joys (and quirks) of the Wisconsin Northwoods region and the Michigan Upper Peninsula. It could have easily been snapped almost anywhere in Vilas or Oneida County, WI or along the seemingly endless stretch of US 2 through the Ottawa National Forest in the U.P.

We’ve devolved to a manzanita branch with white lights on it in the front window, but next year there will be a grandchild so we may go back to the traditional tree, which does after all have ornaments going back to our early married days. We got our tree from a farm out Coburg way. I brought along my limb saw (like yours), as well as my chainsaw (always prepared), but since they were not charging extra for them to cut it for you, I elected to stay un-sappy.
