This will hopefully be the final chapter of our our drawn-out technical issues drama. Early this morning, CC migrated to our hot new dedicated server, and it’s working like a charm. Here’s the vital statistics:
One of those servers in OVH’s many server farms is ours, and its got an Intel i5 processor; 4/4 cores/threads; runs at 3.1 GHz; has 8 GB of RAM and two 1 TB disks. The important thing is that the site is running fast, with the kind of response time (especially in the back end) that brings tears of joy to my eyes. It’s been a long, frustrating haul, but thanks to Josh Matthies who has handled the migration, those days are hopefully behinds us. Whew…
I thought there was an improvement, the site runs good from this end.

Well no offense to Paul, but my laptop has better specs than that server. Actually my wife’s laptop does too, and its pink. So this is no Porsche. 🙂
Now that being said, Web servers don’t usually require too much power, so its great that the site is running so good. I have never had any problems with it though, this site works better than TTAC.
Congratulations, Paul, I love it when people stick at something and make it work. But then again, that’s how we learn stuff. The people with whom I went to school were two groups: one that did stuff, and the other that didn’t. Three decades on, I know which group to which I would prefer to be a member.

Some years back I knew a friendly female acquaintance who happened to a high-class “escort”. She had an unusual fondness for Hooters buffalo wings, and also really dug their outfits- even though she never worked there. That gave me an idea.
A little online shopping, a quick detour to Hooters, and then to her place. That was a GREAT night!
I knew a couple of friends of hers. One actually worked at Hooters for a while, but too many of the guys who came in there recognized her from her *other* line of work. It made her a little uncomfortable after a while, so she eventually quit.
The second one was sitting at the bar filling out an job application for Hooters, minding her own business, when several of the girls passing by gave her dirty looks and snide comments. She promptly ripped up her application, threw it in the trash, and walked out. She never set foot in there again- not even as a customer.

This thing has steadfastly refused to remember me which is ok because I have gotten used to it. Are we going to have to sign in every time we want to comment?
Not sure what platform you are on, no problem here. My PC runs Mozilla Firefox and the iPad is on iOS6 I think. Both keep me logged in for at least a number of days if not weeks. Post what you are using and maybe someone else who has the same can help.
I run on google chrome. Took advantage of the moment when it didn’t remember me to switch from wstarvingteacher to my real name. I’m using a mac and have mozilla too. Might switch to that for CC.

It could be a cookie problem – do you have cookies turned on?

Good news! Seems to be running great from here. And it kept me logged in before and after.
Holy cow, what an improvement! It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like it was worth it.
Glad to see the plan has finally come together!
Props to Paul for his determination in sticking it out through the long, troublesome process; and to Josh, whose expertise has played a crucial role in getting the site’s underpinnings up to snuff since becoming involved in the project a few weeks ago.
Looking forward to another year of growth for CC – especially now that the site is prepared to support it!

QOTD: Do we get our 1200 pixel width pictures back? The 900 limit is serviceable, but not so great with old ads with text which could really use the larger size.

After spending a little bit of time on the back-end of the site just now, I will happily affirm it has a lot more juice. Plus it’s loading much faster on the front end.

I’m having a problem loading CC on my home computer, but it’s working fine (and very fast!) on my phone. In Firefox I just get “Curbside Classic is moving to a new server.” message no matter how many times I refresh the page. If I try to go to articles directly searching through Google I get a Not Found 404 error. I’m sure this is on my end but what am I doing wrong?
Worked fine for me on Firefox, so it’s not the browser. I had the message but only for an hour or so while the migration was occurring I suppose. The next time it took me straight here.
Your browser is stuck on an old cache version of CC. refresh your browser, or even close it and re-open it. It just needs a good strong kick.
Well I tried clearing the cache, and Firefox instantly crashed… but when I re-opened it, CC magically worked again so all is well. The site has only occasionally been slow for me in the past, but it loaded faster than it ever has just now!!
It sounds like you somehow still have the old server address for the site in your DNS cache (it should have been replaced by the new address within about 10 minutes of the completion of the migration).
If you still have problems you could try flushing your DNS cache:
On windows enter “ipconfig /flushdns” into the command prompt.
On Mac OS X enter “dscacheutil –flushcache” into the terminal.
I did just get this when I posted the last comment:

I’d like to think it is all due to Mrs. Allen and the Mad Typing Skillz she instilled in me in 7th grade typing class but I don’t think that’s it…

This was caused by the site detecting you by your ip address, and limiting your number of comments via that method. The new caching system was making it appear that everyone was connecting from the IP of the caching system instead of their own IP address, confusing the site. Once I corrected it, the old user sessions from your real ips kicked in and that is why you are logged in again.
This problem should be resolved now.
It looks like the ability to edit your own post in its first 15 minutes is no longer available.

Yes, I see the edit function is gone. Doesn’t stay logged in either. Lightning fast though, I can live with having to log in every time if need be.
I think I have fixed the problem that was causing this, please comment if you still have this problem.

The problem went away and it put me back into my default user name. No problem I just changed when the opportunity hit because I retired from teaching about three years ago and it isn’t descriptive anymore. Actually, I’m a bit fat so it never was descriptive.
A rose by any name, it remembered me.
Edit: edit was restored also.
I just posted a comment and got the 15 min edit notice just as I always have. I’m using OS X 10.9 on a MacBook Pro.
I was willing to deal with whatever speed it was willing to give me before, so whatever we get now is great. Thanks guys! It does seem better though…

If you’re still monitoring this, I’m having some new problems. Site may or may not update when I load it, I don’t see comments on some posts even when the number box shows they’re there and even a refresh of the screen means I have to log in again. Windows 7 on Shaw cable if that’s any help. Thanks,
Try powering down your PC/device totally, and rebooting. If that still doesn’t work, leave another comment or e-mail me via the Contact form.
Sorry for the late reply. That didn’t seem to make a difference, and it now looks like I have to log in to see any content added since my last log in. I’m gone for a while, I’ll try again in a week or so. Thanks.
Edit: It does stay logged in now when I leave the page or refresh. Just won’t load new content until I log in.
