Eugene is not totally devoid of Rolls-Royces, but the ones I’ve seen so far have all been vintage, although conspicuously lacking lichen and moss. But then I catch sight of this: a new Roller, on Coburg Road (yes, that is on the north side of the river in Ferry Street Bridge, or little California, as we call it). At first glance, I thought no; a Phantom in Eugene? That just wouldn’t be allowed. But then I realized it was the “baby” Rolls. OK; we have lots of old timber baron money around, as well as a few successful drug dealers…why not? As I finally pulled up alongside briefly, I caught a quick glimpse of the driver: male, about sixty-five or so, with long silver-white hair. Stereotypes are useless.
I have seen more than a few new Phantoms here in poverty-stricken Vancouver, Soviet Canuckistan. One actually had Hello Kitty cushions between the headrests and seats. I wonder of RR will consider a full “Hello Kitty” package? It would do wonders for sales with the local clientele here.
Hello kitty cushions, eh? Probably driven by a little Asian teenage girl. You know, Ferraris and Lambos for their boys, Rolls Royces and Bentleys for their daughters.

No Ghosts in my small town, but a black Phantom occasionally wanders around. It belongs to the local Ford franchise owner I believe. It always makes me smile as it’s often muddy and dusty like a normal car.

There used to be an older hippy type running around my area. He had the VW bus and all. You’d never have known that he was one of the owners of the largest Audi/BMW/Mercedes franchises in the Chicago area.

Nothing surprising about a man who has spent his life in hypocrisy now driving the ultimate hypomobile. The hippies were ever about public appearance anyway. And drugs. are you sure the driver isn’t one of those drug dealers you spoke about? Mighty fine profession for an older hippie, considering he was probably dealing ’em out of a VW bus in his youth.
Posh, I grew up in hippie land and the vast majority of them were just middle class kids playing at being hippies. There were a few freaks around but most of them were harmless hobo types. I always found the hippie thing a bit on the boring side. I never had any desire to act by a certain set of rules set out by someone else anyway.
All of a sudden in the last few years where I live, I’ve noticed more and more of these contemporary Rollers and Bentleys rolling around our streets. Mind you, I live in a fairly conservative, middle-class mid-western mid-size city, where full size SUVs and pickups rule the roads, except for the blue-hairs, who all drive Buick Centuries or Toyota Camrys. Old money-types and the doctors and lawyers of means around here have for several decades favored Benzes and Bimmers, with an occasional Jag thrown in for good measure. But lately the younger generations of old-money, and the nouveau riche are not shy about flaunting their wealth with the latest Euro high-end sedan (and cabriolet) fashion statement.
I’ve also noticed more high-end Euro exotic hardware prowling around. In just the last month I’ve spotted two brand new Ferrari 458 Italias and an Enzo I haven’t seen here before. Okay, it’s not Beverly Hills or South Beach, but for where I live it’s a trend.
From that rear angle I don’t even know if I would have noticed the car or not. It seems a thoroughly non-remarkable shape.
The are still a big car, and have a lot of presence, I saw one recently and it took a bit to tell the rear view from the larger Phantom.
I wonder why you would buy the Phantom actually, it is not as if the Ghost is missing anything. Other than the “because I can”/top-end-model thing.
