I am very pleased to announce that Aaron Severson — known as Ate Up With Motor from the name of his website, — is joining Curbside Classic as Senior Editor. I consider Aaron the best all-round automotive historian of our time, as most of the great print-age historians from that earlier era are mostly gone, retired or churning out predictable coffee-table books. Aaron’s ability to dive deep into subjects that capture his wide-ranging interest can be breathtaking; he is a veritable font of information, facts, statistics, references and anecdotes and has an exceptional ability to synthesize them into cogent perspectives and conclusions.
Aaron has been a good friend to CC and myself personally, providing insightful comments and behind the scenes support and conversations. Now he will also be contributing content to help further CC’s mission to be the best and biggest general interest automotive history site.
Aaron will still continue his ultra-deep dives at Ate Up With Motor, which can take months of research. The content that he will be generating here will be shorter and medium-length pieces of all sorts from his vast knowledge and library, and will be seen here a number of time per week. We are a fast paced blog, and CC will be an opportunity for Aaron to share the many other aspects of his interests and research.
I have long treasured Aaron’s remarkable abilities and his supportive interactions with CC, so it makes me very happy to be able to have him join CC in this way. Frankly, my own creative energy forces are ebbing some, so this is a great opportunity to keep CC fresh and moving forward.
I also want to thank Rich Baron, CC’s Executive Editor, whose Vintage Snapshot series has become a staple on Google’s Discover feed, thus generating exceptional stats and resultant revenue to make this expansion of our staff financially possible. And of course for his other contributions in helping to keep the site humming along. We have already surpassed last year’s all-time record for readership.
And while I’m in the spirit of being thankful, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our many Contributors who generate such a wide range of content. A special shout out to Tatra87, whose indefatigable curbsiding in Tokyo (and other exotic locales) has resulted in 877 posts so far, a record for contributors.
And of course also a huge thank you to our readers, especially the loyal ones who come here every day (or two or three) and those of you who have signed up for our ad-free membership. You’re the ones that keep us all going, with your readership and comments and other support. Thanksgiving has come early this year.
Congrats, great choice! Look forward to many good reads.
An early holiday gift for CC readers. Great news all around.
What wonderful news! Aaron’s work has always been very impressive and I look forward to seeing more!
This is perhaps your best “find” yet! Congratulation to you, Aaron, the site, and all the readers.
Excellent news! Looking forward to the content!
This is good news. I’m a big fan of Ate Up With Motor. Aaron is the real deal. (This is not to say that the rest of you are imaginary.)
This is great news, love Aaron’s posts here as well as his own website! And I agree heartily on a shoutout to Tatra87 and Rich Baron; really appreciate their efforts here, even if I don’t always comment as much as I’d like to.
Terrific to hear this – I admire Aaron’s work, and look forward to his contributions here.
And I also agree with the shoutout to shout out Tatra – I have no idea how he’s able to post so many fascinating finds and writeups, but I’m glad he does!
I just received notification that Hemmings Classic Car magazine is ceasing publication as of the February 25 issue. It is great to know that Curbside Classic is thriving (special thanks to Rich!) and has an even brighter future with Aaron onboard. I’m sure CC has long surpassed Paul’s initial goals due to his great stewardship. Thanks to all involved.
Very happy to hear Aaron is coming here.
I also got the notice about Classic Car mag. Very sad to hear that.
I also had my HCC subscription cancelled, as well as Hemmings Muscle Machines. And both Motor Trend and Car and Driver have gone quarterly. My mail box runs are getting progressively less exciting! Print magazines are really struggling.
Sad news about HCC, ever since Terry Ehrich died Hemmings just isn’t the same, it’s just became a big corporate empire, he would not have been pleased. I’ve gotten Hemmings since the late ’70s and HCC and it’s predecessor Special Interest Autos since not long afterward, in addition to Old Cars Weekly. All kind s of magazines and newspapers are dying unfortunately. We still like reading our paper every morning, we’ll be their last subscriber.
Well, I wasn’t expecting this, but it’s good news. I’ve been a fan of AUWM since some time in 2011, IIRC.
Thanksgiving has indeed come early, even if some of the cars are turkeys. I’m looking at you, GM X-cars.
Outstanding news. Aaron does excellent work—looking forward to this!
Wonderful addition to C.C.!
Congratulations Aaron! I look forward to your writing here.
This is fantastic news! A great partnership.
Great to hear, and great to hear about the readership increases.
I am looking forward to more fine information. It is always a treat to read CC.
This is so great! So glad to have Aaron in this role as part of the CC community!
Welcome Aaron, I look forward to your contributions!
Great news! Welcome to CC, Aaron! You know the place very well, so I’m sure you’ll feel right at home.
Fantastic news. Congrats Aaron
This is great news! I have learned so much from AUWM and Aaron’s comments on this site. His research is second to none and I look forward to some great future contributions.
I’ve long admired Aaron and AUWM, Christmas came early this year! Aaron’s journalism and in-depth writing are unmatched.
Great news, onward and upward. I’ve been enjoying CC for a few years now and contributed a few pieces too.
Looking forward to Aaron’s contributions.
Parroting someone above, Aaron is the real deal. And in this crazy world we’re living in, “real” really means something. Also, best avatar of all time. What does that even mean?
Long time fan of Aaron and his insightful comments here. His website is a great place for a deep dive.
To Aaron: Congratulations!!! You will definitely be appreciated around here!
I’ll add myself to the chorus: congratulations Aaron – your depth of research and knowledge is exceptional, and I can’t wait to see it here too! And of course congratulations to Paul – you’ve added yet another top-class contributor to the stable of thoroughbreds. Having been here since the start, CC has always been fantastic, here’s to many more years of motor-noting joy!
That’s really good news. Good on you Aaron, a great addition indeed.
Great news indeed!
Christmas came early this year! Fantastic news, Aaron’s work over the years is beyond reproach!
That’s huge! I’m sure Aaron will make for a great acquisition. Can’t wait to read him here.
I’ve been a big fan of ate up with motor. I think it’s a real gem.
Many congratulations to Aaron and the CC crew! I look forward to your presence here at Curbside Classics.
WELCOME Aaron. Some of the best technical writing I’ve had the pleasure to review was Aaron’s series on GM transmissions. CC is gaining some great expertise.
Shout out to Paul for his good eye for talent as well.
I am a longtime fan of Aaron and is work at AUWM, am delighted that he will play an official role at CC!
A fine and worthy addition to our “family” here.
I have enjoyed and admired Aaron’s articles for a long time.
Now that DED Jr is no longer with us; I consider Paul and Aaron my personal top two automotive experts and raconteurs.
Great news, another long time fan of AUWM here.
Wonderful, have enjoyed his website for years now.
This is terrific news! Aaron, welcome aboard, we are happy to have you.
A laurel and hearty handshake!
I discovered AUWM more than a decade ago, in the early years of my 1969 Barracuda ownership.
It was this write-up, no doubt about it:

This is a brilliant decision! Aaron’s unconventional education and background (for an automotive journalist) contribute to his unique perspective in the field of automotive history. Aside from diligent research, he adds a refreshing degree of historical and sociological context to his writings.
Aaron is a true historian and will be a credit to Curbside Classics. Great news!
Welcome Aaron.
We look forward to your CC contributions.
